OMG THIS NEEDS TO BE REQUIRED READING FOR ALL WHITE PEOPLE

like there is no simpler, more concise, yet entirely inclusive way to explain this shit. Like i couldnt say it any better myself. somebody needs to publish this as an article or something (for those dumbfuckers who think tumblr isnt a legitimate place to express ideas and take in new information) 

Love this and as a social worker, I appreciate its message and delivery very much.  But I am slightly insulted by the comment above mine.

“Required reading for all white people.”

How about required reading for everyone?  No social identity is 100% innocent in this regard, and everyone has looked down upon someone else for something that makes them different than those at the privileged standpoint.

If we’re going to view it as an issue of privilege/power position versus minority status, then we should consider the following:

Required reading for all white people.

Required reading for all men.

Required reading for all cis-gendered individuals.

Required reading for all heterosexuals.

Required reading for all people of a prevalent religious group.

Required reading for all people who are classified as upper-upper class socioeconomic status.

Do you see where I’m going with this?  Most of us have a position of privilege in one regard or another, even if our position of oppression is a more prominent part of our identity. 

I have a friend who is a white male.  This means he has an easier time obtaining work in the job market, and will likely be making more than his Black or female counterparts.  But he is gay.  Which means that whatever job he has, no matter how excellent the benefits, he will struggle to find a way to share those benefits with his partner.

We all need to remember that everyone has an identity that they struggle with, and we must all be tolerant of those who have had to start the race further back because of one or more of their identities.
